Weather conditions is an element of flight attendant training that must be taught to new hire flight attendants. Some may wonder, why do flight attendants need to know about weather conditions? After all, they’re along for the ride whether they like it or not. The weather has a direct impact on flight attendant operations, particularly service, but also safety. By understanding weather conditions, crewmembers will have a greater appreciation and understanding how weather conditions directly affect their scheduled tasks. Additionally, they can keep passengers better informed about what’s happening, how long the weather may last, and decide whether certain services must be suspended or ended. Flight attendants must be able to apply the information provided by the flight crew to determine how to best perform their inflight services. While the PIC is directly responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft, s/he can’t be made responsible for making every decision for the flight attendants. Yes, at times the PIC may determine it’s best to have the flight attendants stay seated and announce this to the crew. However, the flight attendants, particularly the lead flight attendant/purser must be able to act autonomously unless input from the PIC is needed.
